“It looks weird from here, not as daunting as
you’d like.” I say I dig it cuz it’s so
honest—like hems of copper against black
steel can speak of stocks in motion, markets
turning, shipyards, assets, like bronze pilas-
ters have mouths with which to signify New
York’s cruelty, its reification of
abstract relations, and do so fairly;
you say I dig it cuz its structure lines
up with Barad-Dûr, right down to the eye
above its spire, surveying Junior’s Cheese-
cake down the block with cornea aflame.
What’s the difference in the end? Perhaps just
the angle: we were looking from the bridge.
