Two Poems
by Guy Cramer

LIKE THE GOLDEN GIRLS

my grandfather said
he dated a girl
while stationed
in California in the 1940’s
he couldn’t remember her name
though she was on a show
like The Golden Girls
where several pillars of wisdom
were placed under one roof
including a laugh track

i smirked at his story
because she’d made such an impression
yet he couldn’t remember her name or the show

he said it wasn’t funny
the aging mind can’t be avoided
and someday i’d be thinking
about someone only a handful of the living
would remember
someone who’d play in my head
like a sentimental song
waking me from a dream
where i was living
in a time of peace

i asked why he didn’t go search for her
since grandma was already gone
he said the odds of this woman
still being alive were slim
slim as growing another prostate
slim as being seen at the DMV
to get his driver’s license reinstated
slim as becoming visible to the world again
slim as raising an eldest son from the dead
slim as a tv show cast full of aging people
that lasts for 7 seasons

HEARING CATHEDRAL BELLS FROM A CAB IN NEW ORLEANS

craving pancakes
and redemption
